Best QR Code Sizes for Print & Display

A simple size guide for the most common QR code placements.

A QR code that is too small, blurry, or crowded will not scan reliably. The right size depends on where the code will be placed and how far away the scanner will be. This guide gives practical minimum and recommended sizes for the most common uses.

When in doubt, print a test copy and scan it with the default camera app on a few different phones before ordering or publishing the final version.

Business cards

Minimum
0.8 x 0.8 in (2 x 2 cm)
Recommended
1.0 x 1.0 in (2.5 x 2.5 cm)

Place the code in a clean corner with quiet space around it so it scans easily.

Flyers and handouts

Minimum
1.0 x 1.0 in (2.5 x 2.5 cm)
Recommended
1.2 x 1.2 in (3 x 3 cm)

Pair the code with a short call-to-action so people know why they should scan.

Posters and menus

Minimum
1.5 x 1.5 in (4 x 4 cm)
Recommended
2.0 x 2.0 in (5 x 5 cm)

Make sure the code is high-contrast and not placed over a busy background.

Billboards and large displays

Minimum
8.0 x 8.0 in (20 x 20 cm)
Recommended
12.0 x 12.0 in (30 x 30 cm) or larger

The viewing distance matters. Larger displays need much bigger codes to scan from far away.

General sizing rule

A reliable starting point is to make the QR code at least one inch (2.5 cm) wide for every 10 feet (3 meters) of expected scanning distance. If someone will scan from 30 feet away, the code should be roughly 3 inches wide — and larger is usually safer.
